About Nituff

Standard Specifications: MIL-A-8625 Type III

Nituff® penetrates fluoropolymers into precision coatings for metals. After undergoing the Nituff process, the properties of treated metals are transformed; their surface hardness becomes comparable to case-hardened steel and gains unusual surface durability, high corrosion resistance, a low coefficient of friction, clean and dry-lubricating surface, and strong dielectric properties. The Nituff process maintains the durability and strength of harder metals, while offering all the benefits of aluminum, such as light weight, easy machinability, and low cost.

The Nituff process is carried out with the strictest processing and quality assurance procedures. We inspect all incoming parts to verify critical dimensions. We monitor processing from one central location and carry out systematic measurement of parts, including during processing.

Nituff is used in many engineering applications to facilitate the use of lighter materials at lower manufacturing costs while improving component performance. Nituff is used in nearly every industrial sector where aluminum is used. For example:

   • It is used to enhance components in a variety of aircraft and aerospace applications, including missile actuators, aircraft brake components, sealing surfaces on airplane and space satellite hatches, pressure regulating valves for astronaut breathing apparatus, and seat positioning devices for the space shuttle seats.

   • Nituff is used to decrease cleanup time or improve release characteristics of injection molds, composite material forming equipment, spray paint applicators, soldering nests, hot melt glue equipment, sonic welding and thermal sealing equipment for plastics, and military night vision hardware.

   • FDA-approved medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and food processing equipment are often treated with Nituff to provide easily cleaned surfaces that do not require lubricants. Many tortillas and ground meat patties are cooked or processed on surfaces treated with Nituff. The Upjohn Co. specifies the treatment for its freeze-drying equipment due to its non-stick characteristics, ease of cleanup, and to obtain heat conductivity superior to stainless steel.

   • In the textile and paper industries, Nituff permits the use of aluminum for many high-speed machinery components such as spools, rolls, and guides. The Nituff surface resists abrasion and eliminates the need for lubricants that might stain the paper or textile.

   • The wear surfaces of hydraulic or pneumatic valves and cylinders treated with Nituff exhibit a ten-fold decrease in coefficient of friction when compared with uncoated aluminum surfaces. The Nituff surfaces also demonstrate excellent resistance to corrosion in severe environments. Mosier Industries recommends Nituff coated fluid power components to their customers whose products must contend with severe service conditions.

Standard Specifications: MIL 8625 Type II, Class 2 (Gold, Blue, Red, Black)

Standard anodizing processes produce a porous surface which can easily accept dyes. The number of dye colors is almost endless and range from light to dark. These basic color processes are typically sealed with hot water or steam and nickel acetate to convert the oxide into its hydrated form which reduces dye bleed out and improves corrosion resistance.

Pioneer's proprietary color anodizing is treated with our exclusive Nituff® seal, which is a Teflon® penetrating process. This Teflon seal makes Pioneer's color anodizing more resistant to corrosion and abrasion than other standard color anodize. It nearly eliminates leeching and the resultant "rainbow effect" usually associated with color anodizing. Manufacturers of appearance-sensitive products can get the aesthetic appeal of color anodize, plus improved performance in chemical sterilization and weathering environments. Only Pioneer offers dyed, sulfuric anodize treated with our exclusive Teflon penetrating process.

Pioneer offers standard colors (black, blue, gold, and red) with and without our Nituff seal. The benefit of color anodizing is its striking appearance which provides a strong visual impact for applications in the medial industry, various military components, and a variety of other cosmetically sensitive consumer products.

Standard Specifications: MIL-A-8625 Type III, Class 2 Black

Black Nituff has all of the same characteristics as Nituff® with a rich black finish. Black Nituff penetrates fluoropolymers into precision coatings for metals. After undergoing the Black Nituff process, the properties of treated metals are transformed; their surface hardness becomes comparable to case-hardened steel and gains unusual surface durability, high corrosion resistance, a low coefficient of friction, clean and dry-lubricating surface, and strong dielectric properties. The Black Nituff process maintains the durability and strength of harder metals, while offering all the benefits of aluminum, such as light weight, easy machinability, and low cost.

The Black Nituff process is carried out with the strictest processing and quality assurance procedures. We inspect all incoming parts to verify critical dimensions. We monitor processing from one central location and carry out systematic measurement of parts, including during processing.
